Paint is a chemical, any pigmented liquid, liquefiable or mastic composition which after application to a substrate in a thin layer, converts into a solid film. It's most common uses are to colour, protect, or provide texture to objects. Paints can be purchased or made/manufactured in many colours and different types and compositions. For example, in market one can see the availability of both watercolors and synthetic colours, a variety ranging from oil colours to dry cakes can also be seen. These are typically stored, applied and sold as liquids, but it is to note many dry back into a solid. Most of them are either oil based or water based, both having their own particular characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. For one as an example, it is illegal in most municipalities to discard oil based paint down household drains. Solvents for cleaning them up are also available in different ranges.
Since a very long time paints are used for creating artistic patterns and designs which are majorly known as paintings. For such purposes in the older times primarily linseed oil and siccative (drying) oil paints were used as the major kind of paints in fine art applications. Today, the most popular type for artistic work is oil paint.
